What is a parol? A parol is an ornamental, star-shaped Christmas lantern from the Philippines. It is traditionally made out of bamboo and paper.
The word parol is derived from the Spanish word farol, meaning “lantern”
In the Philippines, the parol has become an iconic symbol of the Filipino Christmas. Parols are normally hung in homes from September through Epiphany to honor the Three Kings and their visit to the infant Jesus. During the Maunaloa and Kualapuu pineapple plantation days, many families made and hung parols on their porches. Workshops, parol parades, and competitions are held in Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles every year.
Workshop cost is $5 ($4 for current MAC Members). All supplies will be provided. Space is limited! Register today! Registration will close on Saturday, Dec. 15.
